El "tong" en "ton glen" significa "dar algo", y "len" significa "tomar algo. Esta meditación especial puede rastrear sus raíces hasta hace 2,500 años con el Señor Buda, y fue enseñada por el Maestro Shantideva, quien escribió "La Guía del Camino del Bodhisattva" hace unos trece siglos.
Luego, en el Tíbet, fue popularizada alrededor del año 1000 d.C. por los Kadampas, las personas que escribieron lo que llamamos textos Lojong.
